A Love Letter to Les Puces
When I started East Wing Studio in 2021 one of my long term plans was to be doing annual vintage sourcing trips in France. I’d imagine myself in Saint-Germain, coffee in hand, maps with vintage markets mapped out under my arm, ready to find treasures that had outlived empires. Fast forward just 6 months into my journey and that daydream came to life. We touched down in Paris for our very first buying trip… a true pinch-me moment that I’ll never, ever forget.
Paris has this way of reminding you that art and life are meant to be intertwined. Since then, we’ve returned annually (it’s hard to resist the pull of Paris!) to the city that started it all, the birthplace of so much beauty, craftsmanship, and inspiration.
Between the smell of espresso and the soft hum of the morning markets, there’s always a moment where I stop, take it all in, and have an immense sense of gratitude that THIS is my “job”
My day starts early, weaving through the narrow lanes of Saint-Ouen, where dealers wave hello from behind towers of gilt mirrors and velvet armchairs. By noon, im usually perched on fold-out chairs with our suppliers, sipping coffee, discussing 17th-century tapestries as if they were our mutual friends.
One of those afternoons still lives vividly in my memory, the day I found my first verdure tapestry for East Wing Studio. My supplier unfolded it right there on the pavement, its centuries-old threads glowing in the Paris light. We sat quietly, admiring the craftsmanship, the way the colours had mellowed. It was love at first sight. Two months later, it came back to us completely restored, lined, ribboned, and magnificent.

That tapestry ended up in a client’s home, but it also marked something much bigger for me: a reminder that patience, passion and a good eye can bring the past back to life.
It’s an honour to play even a small part in that story by preserving a piece of history that might have otherwise been forgotten, to care for these centuries-old pieces, restore them with love, and send them off to their next forever home into someone else’s care, ready to be admired for another three hundred years, knowing they’ll outlast us all, just as they have for centuries.
What began as a hopeful idea has turned into an annual chapter in the East Wing Studio story, it’s totally surreal that now we’re greeted in the lane ways by so many of our trusted suppliers by name and have created some truly beautiful friendships along the way. Each trip inspires the next collection, deepens our relationships and fuels the fire that started it all. Paris has become our creative compass, a place that reminds us why we fell in love with vintage & interiors in the first place.
So, whether you’re planning your own vintage pilgrimage or simply curious about what makes Les Puces de Saint-Ouen the world’s most intoxicating flea market, here’s our little guide, equal parts hard-earned wisdom and coffee fuelled adventure to help you navigate your way through the maze of the world’s most enchanting flea market.

1. Knowledge Is Your Best Travel Companion
Before setting foot in this vintage wonderland arm yourself with knowledge cher ami, because here, discerning the vrai from the faux is not just a skill, it’s an art. If you’re new to this, consider consulting with an expert antiques appraiser. Need quick advice while there? Don’t hesitate to reach out to us through a direct message, we’re always here to help!
2. Trust Your Hands (and Your Instincts)
At Les Puces, your hands will tell you more than your eyes. Master the subtle art of tactile assessment. Press, tap, and slightly wiggle each item to check its structural integrity. Watch for signs of wear like uneven legs or misaligned drawers. Examine surfaces and joints for signs of repair, like mismatched wood grains or visible glue, which can affect value and durability. Keep an eye out for unexpected details like an embossment or signature that can reveal a piece’s provenance or true worth.
3. Negotiation: Equal Parts Finesse and Fun
Negotiating at Les Puces requires the finesse of a diplomat and the savvy of a seasoned trader. Engage vendors with respect and light-hearted banter, aiming to make each transaction enjoyable and fair for both sides. French dealers expect a little dance before the deal. Start with warmth, curiosity, and a smile, it’s the unspoken currency of Les Puces. Bargaining is normal, but humour helps more than hardball tactics. If you connect, they’ll often invite you behind the counter to see pieces not yet on display, that’s where the real treasures hide.
A phrase to remember: “C’est votre meilleur prix ?” (“Is that your best price?”) said kindly and with a smile works wonders.
4. Expect Historical Baggage (The Good Kind)
Every antique comes with a past, a few scratches, a wobbly leg, or faded upholstery. It’s part of the charm. Be prepared for the likelihood that these “project pieces” may come with their own set of historical “baggage” so consider the potential need for restoration. Whether it’s refinishing wood or reupholstering fabric, the cost of these refurbishments can add up so make sure to account for these in your budget. Remember, you’re not just buying a piece of furniture… you’re becoming its next custodian.
5. Don’t Forget the Journey Home
Found the perfect piece? Now comes the challenge of transport & logistics which plays a crucial role post-purchase, particularly for large or bulky goods. For international shipping, consult with vendors about reliable shipping services. Prepare for this final leg of the journey, as it’s crucial to ensure your treasures arrive safely to their new home. Always confirm packing quality, a single layer of bubble wrap won’t cut it for a Louis XVI commode.
Bonus Tip: Pack Light, Wander Slowly
There’s a rhythm to Les Puces, a mix of music, laughter, and cigarette smoke curling through the alleys. Don’t rush. Stop for a coffee at Chez Louisette where Edith Piaf still plays through the speakers. Chat with stallholders, even if your French is tragic. They appreciate effort and enthusiasm far more than perfection.
Final Thoughts
Les Puces isn’t just a flea market, it’s a living museum, a designer’s playground, and a love affair with the past. Every visit leaves us a little more inspired and a lot more in love with what we do.
So go, wander, explore, and let Paris surprise you. It has a way of gifting you exactly what you didn’t know you were searching for, a spark of inspiration, a story and a feeling you’ll carry home with you forever.
Bonne chance mes amis
With love,
Julie - East Wing Studio
