A guide to creating beautiful mood lighting with floor lamps and wall lights.
If you've spent any time with me, you'll know I have one very strong opinion when it comes to interiors: we never, ever, ever want the big light.
I know it has a purpose. It helps you find the missing earring and confirms the dog has, in fact, tracked mud through the house. But as a rule? The big light is not creating ambience.
The very first thing I notice when I walk into a home is the lighting. Before the furniture, before the artwork, before the styling, it's the lighting. Great lighting has an incredible ability to make a home feel warm, inviting and beautifully lived in. It changes the mood entirely.
The secret is layering.
I always encourage people to think of lighting in the same way they think about furniture. You don't rely on one chair in a room, so why rely on one light? Layering different sources of lighting creates depth, softness and those little pools of glow that make a home feel relaxed and welcoming.
Floor lamps are one of my favourite ways to achieve this. They add height, soften corners and bring another sculptural element into a room. The Trio floor lamp from the East Wing Studio collection does this beautifully. It has a striking presence, but it never overwhelms the space. Instead, it quietly creates atmosphere while adding character and dimension.
And then there are wall lights, which I think are one of the most underrated elements in a home.
Our Bastian wall light, Belmond wall light and Bellamy wall light all have the ability to completely transform the mood of a room, particularly when they're on a dimmer. Honestly, magic. Whether placed in a hallway, beside a bed or in a living space, they cast the kind of gentle glow that instantly makes a room feel calm, intimate and considered.
The goal isn't necessarily to make a room brighter. It's to make it feel better.
The homes we all love spending time in rarely rely on overhead lighting alone. Instead, they use lighting thoughtfully and intentionally. They have corners that glow, walls that feel softly illuminated and spaces that invite you to slow down and stay a little longer.
