There’s a part of our business that doesn’t make it to the shop floor.
- It’s the factory floors.
- The long workshop tables scattered with tools.
- The smell of timber dust and metal filings.
- The late-night video calls across time zones.
- The sample tweaks. The re-tweaks. The “just one more adjustment” moments.
In our short four years, East Wing Studio has taken our designs to artisans across four continents. What begins as a sketch at my desk has travelled into workshops around the world, into the hands of makers who turn drawings into something tangible, weighty and real.
And that’s where the magic lives.
It Starts With a Sketch (and a Slight Obsession)
Every piece begins in-house.
I design what I feel is missing. What I want to live with. What I want our clients to walk into a room and immediately gravitate toward. Proportions are tested. Materials are debated. Details are pushed and pulled until they feel balanced.
Then comes the part most people don’t see: finding the right artisan partner to bring it to life.
Not the biggest factory.
Not the fastest.
Not the cheapest.
The right one.
Small Batch. Always.
We don’t mass produce.
Some of our collections are as small as 30 pieces. Sometimes fewer. And yes, that means late nights, long flights, factory visits, working across time zones and a whole lot of back-and-forth… all for what, commercially speaking, is a very modest run.
It would be easier to press a button and order 500 pre made pieces off a shelf.
But easier has never been the goal.
I knew that if I did, I’d lose everything I wanted this business to stand for.
Every East Wing Studio piece passes through many hands before it reaches our clients. Hands that carve. Weld. Weave. Stitch. Sand. Finish. Refine.
There is a very big difference between a machine-pressed production line and a workshop where the floor might still be concrete and worn smooth from years of craft.
We choose the second one. Every time.
Because around here, the little things are the big things.
The In-Between Is Everything
There’s a beautiful, messy, collaborative space between design and manufacture.
It’s walking factory floors and running our fingers over every finish (more than once).
It’s adjusting a curve by 5 millimetres.
It’s reworking a join because it needs to feel stronger, cleaner, softer.
It’s video calls at 10pm to review samples under different light.
It’s where vision meets process.
Where art meets engineering.
Where an artisan studies a drawing and interprets it through years of learned skill.
That connection point, that’s what separates East Wing Studio from mass-produced furniture stores. We aren’t filling a catalogue. We’re building collections slowly and intentionally, one relationship at a time.
A Note to Designers & Trade
We know what you’re looking for.
You want pieces that feel unique. Hard-to-find. Not sitting in three other projects across the city. You want that one hero item that anchors a room and makes everything else make sense.
We design for that.
I often say that every East Wing Studio piece should be the one you can’t let go of. The one your client keeps talking about. The one that, if it disappeared tomorrow, you’d genuinely feel something about.
Small-batch production makes that possible.
It means tighter runs. More character. Slight variations that remind you a human was involved. It means your projects feel layered and considered, not pulled from a cookie cutter wholesaler shelf.
For our trade clients, it also means transparency. You know where your pieces are made. You know they’ve been quality-checked (and then checked again). You know we’ve stood on those factory floors ourselves.
The Harder Road (On Purpose)
Let’s be honest, this isn’t the easy way to run a business.
There’s more risk. More coordination. More travel. More cost. More conversations.
But it’s important to us.
Because East Wing Studio was never meant to be fast furniture. It was meant to be thoughtful. Lasting. Made with care. Designed here, brought to life by skilled makers across four continents (so far), and delivered into homes and projects where it becomes part of everyday life.
We love this part, where our design vision meets craftsmanship. Where a sketch becomes something you can sit on, lean against, run your hand over.
It’s a big, beautiful, slightly wild process.
And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
