I7th Century Aubusson Verdure Tapestry

$19,800.00
Sold

I7th Century Aubusson Verdure Tapestry beautifully preserved with a new ribboned linen trim, this impressive piece has an original lining on the back which gives the tapestry a more structured and weighted look when hung.

Aubusson, in the Creuse region of France, became renowned for its tapestries as early as the 16th century when they began to appear in royal residences and were often commissioned by the aristocracy & that’s why their size are of such epic proportions.

This is a verdure tapestry, also called Garden Tapestry, a tapestry decorated with a design based on plant forms. By the 16th century, tapestries with formal designs derived from foliage had become immensely popular.

Using a unique method known as "warping" on a low horizontal loom, the weavers of Aubusson created an illusion of depth in their works making it easy to identify authentic Aubusson pieces.

This Aubusson tapestry is particularly compelling as it’s survived in its complete form with a stylised frame for almost 300 years, making it an incredibly valuable collectors piece. Generally, Aubusson tapestries can be found in fragments so a large intact piece that has retained its original, unfaded colour is a rare find.

Sourced in Paris, France

Ready to be installed.

Dimensions: H230cm, W250cm

We opted for a simple velcro backing system for hanging which gives it a flush finish to the wall.

* Price Includes Australia Wide Postage
